چکیده
In a recent paper Yamada et al. [1] propose the novel concept of ”pinched flow fractionation” (PFF) for the continuous size separation and analysis of particles in microfabricated lab-on-a-chip devices. In their description of the basic principle they claim that especially the width of the pinched and broadened segments will affect the separation performance. In the following we comment on the physics behind this statement. Considering the steady-state laminar flow of an incompressible Newtonian liquid, the flow field v is governed by Stokes equation

Pinched flow fractionation: continuous size separation of particles utilizing a laminar flow profile in a pinched microchannel.
A concept of "pinched flow fractionation" for the continuous size separation and analysis of particles in microfabricated devices has been proposed and demonstrated. In this method, particles suspended in liquid were continuously introduced into a microchannel having a pinched segment and were aligned to one sidewall in the pinched segment by another liquid flow without particles. The particles...
متن کاملA generalized theoretical model for "continuous particle separation in a microchannel having asymmetrically arranged multiple branches".
In this article we present a generalized theoretical model for the continuous separation of particles using the pinched flow fractionation method. So far the theoretical models have not been able to predict the separation of particles without the use of correction factors. In this article we present a model which is capable of predicting the separation from first principles. Furthermore we comm...
متن کاملEfficiency of size-dependent particle separation by pinched flow fractionation
Pinched flow fractionation is shown to be an efficient and selective way to quickly separate particles by size in a very polydisperse semi-concentrated suspension. In an effort to optimize the method, we discuss the quantitative influence of the pinching intensity in the balance between the requirements of selectivity and minimal dilution.

A size-dependent particle separation (classification) is one of the most important procedures in biochemical, environmental, or medical analyses and their applications. However, the smaller particle size or the smaller size difference makes the particle classification difficult. The Lab-on-a-Chip concept have encouraged the miniaturization of various separation or selection methods for small pa...
متن کاملMechanism governing separation in microfluidic pinched flow fractionation devices
We present a computational investigation of the mechanism governing size-based particle separation in microfluidic pinched flow fractionation. We study the behavior of particles moving through a pinching gap (i.e., a constriction in the aperture of a channel) in the Stokes regime (negligible fluid and particle inertia) as a function of particle size. The constriction aperture is created by a pl...
